Where we began and where we are now
In 2010, two companies – Infratil Limited and the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation – got together and bought the Aotearoa New Zealand fuel business off a global company.
That put us in a good position to create something special. So we asked people what they wanted out of a new Aotearoa New Zealand energy company.
They liked the idea of a homegrown brand, run by Kiwis, with a good dollop of attitude.
And in 2011, Z Energy was born and since then has emerged as a business success story. Z became the wholesale fuel supplier to the network of Caltex-branded service stations in 2016.
In 2021, Z entered a scheme of arrangement with Australian petroleum company Ampol Limited (Ampol). As of 10 May 2022, Z is now a wholly owned subsidiary Ampol Group.
Z is proud to be a company that contributes to the New Zealand economy and community.
'Our Why' is Z’s foundation document, outlining the things that Z stands for — our brand, our stands and our vision, values and strategy. It outlines the choices that people make in coming to work for Z.
As our world changes so to does Our Why, we review and update to reflect how we wish to operate, behave, support and engage in our communities based on the changings times we live in.

Who we are
Z Energy now owns and manages:
- nearly 200 service stations
- about 160 truck stops
- pipelines, terminals and bulk storage terminal infrastructure around the country.
- We've invested in creating New Zealand's largest biodiesel manufacturing facility (currently in hibernation).
- an approximate 12.9 per cent stake in Channel Infrastructure (Previously Refining NZ) which runs the Marsden Point Fuel Import Terminal.
- a 25 per cent stake in Loyalty New Zealand which runs Flybuys
Caltex is part of the whānau
In June 2016, Z purchased the assets of Chevron New Zealand, which means Z became the wholesale fuel supplier to the network of Caltex-branded service stations.
The Caltex network is independently owned and operated, with the operators setting their own retail fuel prices.
Supplying the country
Z supplies fuel to retail and large commercial customers like airlines, trucking companies, mines, shipping companies and vehicle fleet operators.
The Z difference
It's our aim to solve what matters for a moving world. For more than a decade, we try to bring this mission to life for you, our shareholders and our other stakeholders every day.
With our size and distribution network, and our Kiwi can-do attitude, we reckon we're better placed than any other company to deliver – with pride and purpose.
From helping people get where they need to go, through to our care and passion for our neighbourhoods and our planet – we're here to make a positive difference.
Z’s strategy is to build a more productive core business as we explore what the future looks like in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world.
We recognise that our future is more about being capability-led, rather than asset or investment-led. We’ve got the hydrocarbon-related assets we need for a strategic advantage.
We’re recycling capital from assets we no longer need so that we can innovate with new options for our customers.
We’re experimenting with future-focused innovation to deliver distinctive customer experiences that drive loyalty of all our customers. We aim to reduce investment risk and time to market by innovating and experimenting using human centred design tools.
